Thomas Stephens
The Unitarian Thomas Stephens had a chemist shop in Merthyr Tudful High Street and was one of the founders of the local public library. His essays won him several eisteddfodic prizes. He was also considered to be a harsh literary critic. He applied his textual criticism techniques to some of Iolo’s creations. For example, he believed that the bardic alphabet dated from the sixteenth century. His Literature of the Kymry (1848) brought him international acclaim
